How To Train Your Brain To Eat Healthier!
We all know that we should be eating healthier, but does that mean we have to cut out our favorite fatty foods? What’s the answer? The short version: Size matters. Hey everyone, this is Matt Lieberman filling in for DNews. Researchers at Vanderbilt University have released a new study that offers a new solution to the age old problem of diet and portion control. Now, dieting seems pretty cut and dry, in principle. Don’t eat unhealthy food, eat more vegetables, exercise regularly, shower, rinse, repeat. But more often than not, our draconian attempts to cut out the pleasurable fats, salts, and sugars that our brains crave cause diets to crash and burn in their early days, or just make us miserable.
However, the trick is to not “diet” at all, but to shift the ratio of portions over time via something the associate professor of Management Kelly L. Haws calls vice-virtue bundles. She and her colleagues discovered that all people have something called a “taste-health balance point” - namely, the proportion of healthy to unhealthy foods in a single meal that will leave that person satisfied with their taste and nutritional choices. It’s different for everyone, and I’m sure that more than one of you has already decided that their balance point looks like a Big Mac with extra lettuce on it.
But here’s the thing: based on the study, most people fall into a similar range. Namely, the perfect vice-virtue bundle has about one quarter to one half vice foods, and half to three quarters virtue foods. The example they provide is a plate of french fries and apple slices. For most people, their brains only need a small portion of fries to satisfy the vice appetite in their brain, while the apple slices handle the rest of their hunger in a nutritious way.
The study goes on to theorize that vice-virtue bundles could revolutionize the the fast food industry, which has undergone changes as Americans seek out healthier food options. By bundling their existing items that are pure vice and pure virtue, they could create new and attractive options at a relatively low cost.
So what can we take away from this study and apply to our own lives? By finding our taste-health balance point, we can allow ourselves the fatty, greasy, buttery foods that we love, in a portion that maximizes our desire for healthier options. The delicious part? Finding that balance one meal at a time. So what do you think about this study? Do you know what your taste-health balance point is? Let us know in the comments below. How to Have a Healthy Diet with a Busy Schedule
So the next step is to go ahead and come out with a plan on how you're going to eat healthy. You are a busy person in your school, you have to plan how to get your homework done, you're a busy mom, busy father you have to plan on how to take care of your children.
It's the same as your diet, you have to put a plan into place. So how you do that is you make these foods available for you. So let's say you had a consultation with your dietitian and your dietitian tells you that you need to eat two fruits a day along with other variety of foods. But we're going to go ahead to talk about the fruit group right now so what you want to do when you go the grocery store is go ahead and buy all the fruit that you need for that week. That way you can challenge yourself and try to get all those pieces of fruit in everyday.
These kinds of food, the desserts and the salty they are great to have in your pantry but if you don't have a plan you might go ahead and resort to these quick convenience foods when you're really hungry. But if you come up with a plan and have something like this meal already in the refrigerator maybe you prepared it the night before and went ahead and did some batch cooking, you decided that you eat it again then you would have a nice healthy meal of the next day. Water is another important thing that people just don't think about so if you need eight glasses of water a day keep a cup by your bathroom sink and in the morning drink one glass before-when you wake up. Then before when you go to bed at night, drink another glass and then during the day find a bottle like this which contains 6-8oz glasses of water. If you drink this throughout the day then you have gotten your 8 glasses throughout the day and that is the way you want to plan to be healthy.

A Healthy Lifestyle Leads To Disease Reversal, Weight Loss, More Energy and Vibrant Health
My name is Larry Cook, and I am here to share with you that we can all be healthy. Now I understand that you might have a disease or you may have cancer, or you may be overweight, or you may have any other kind of health condition, but in reality, we can all be healthy, and the reason why we can all be healthy is because the body actually knows how to heal itself when given the right conditions. That's the most important thing of this entire video that I want you to know about. The body, when given the right conditions, can heal itself. Let's talk about conventional medicine. Conventional medicine is really a process of symptom management.
That means if you have some sort of a symptom, whatever that symptom might be, the western medicine medical model says OK, we've identified that symptom, now let's use a drug to manage that symptom. It's really a symptom management model. This is the most important thing of all. Western medicine is all about managing symptoms, but it doesn't actually get to the root cause of the problem or help the body heal. In fact, as you probably have seen on a gazillion TV ads now and every ad that's in a magazine, there are a million side effects associated with lots and lots of drugs and those side effects are not good for the body.
Then you might ask yourself, well why are there side effects? The side effects are there because what you're being given is a synthetic drug that's been patented so a company can make a lot of money from it, but it doesn't actually help your body heal, it just manages the symptom. If it helped your body heal, you wouldn't need that drug anymore. Hmm.
This is the key. It's not healing. In fact, when you hear the phrase, "There's no cure," or, "We're searching for a cure," or whatever, that's because drugs are never going to cure the problem. Drugs are designed to manage symptoms. Always. Let's go back to what I originally said. When given the right conditions, the body knows how to heal itself. This is the key. Let's jump over to alternative or natural medicine. Natural medicine says oh, you're exhibiting these symptoms, well let's figure out what the body is doing or not doing or not doing correctly that's causing these symptoms to manifest. Then once we've figured out what these different root causes of those symptoms are, we're going to give the body what it needs so it can get better. This happens all the time. You just don't hear about it.
You don't hear about it because the pharmaceutical industry pretty much advertises in the entire mainstream media, and so mainstream media makes a lot of money from the pharmaceutical industry, and no one wants to upset that apple cart, so you're not going to hear about it unless you do some research and you dig a little deeper and you ask a few questions and you visit a few natural doctors, and you start reading some books and you start reading some alternative websites, and pretty soon you're like, wait a second, you mean I have diabetes and I don't have to have diabetes?
You mean I have fibromyalgia and I don't have to have fibromyalgia? You mean I have some other, you name the disease, and I don't actually have to have that disease, I can actually get better? You should get outraged, and a lot of people are outraged. When they finally figure out that the body can heal when given the right conditions and that the western medical model is actually based on treating symptoms and not treating the root cause, it's a game changer. It's a complete game changer, so what have you learned in this video? You've learned that the western medical model treats symptoms with drugs because they're patented, which means the pharmaceutical industry will make a lot of money, and that when given the right conditions, the body can heal itself.
Those conditions might include changing your diet, taking some supplements, doing exercise, maybe doing hyperbaric oxygen therapy, maybe getting a Vitamin C nutritional IV, maybe doing something called hydrotherapy - hot/cold therapy - maybe doing a detoxification protocol.
When you put together all of these different things that you can do to give your body what it needs, including nutrition, nutritional supplements, all of a sudden the body goes hey, I have what I need, I'm going to heal. You know what that's called? That's called a cure. That is a cure. The body knows how to heal itself. What you want to do is live in a way where you are giving your body what it needs to do it's very best, and you want to make sure you don't give your body ...
You don't add to your body things that diminish health. When you consciously do that, that is called the Healthy Living Lifestyle, or also known as the Natural Living Lifestyle. It includes dietary change most often, it usually includes taking some supplements, it definitely includes exercise and exercising on a regular basis, it most likely includes seeing a natural doctor or a naturopathic doctor, an acupuncturist, a chiropractor, those specialists who actually get to the root cause of the problem. It may include doing a chi-building exercises like yoga, and it definitely will include detoxification, colon cleansing, getting rid of the toxins, because you know what?
Our society is extremely toxic, and when you start putting all of these toxins into your body, inadvertently, like you're not necessarily trying to do it but the body starts accumulating and accumulating and accumulating these toxins, if you don't get rid of them, you will have a degenerative disease sooner or later. Your body will start going downhill. You may need to do a detoxification program, but when you start doing all of these different things: you start deliberately eating food consciously, organic, whole, fresh food on a regular basis, you start taking some supplements that help support your body's function, you start exercising, you go see a natural doctor who can really figure out what's going on, and then from there, prescribe a protocol that will help your body heal even more. Wow, all of a sudden you don't have your disease any more. You've lost weight.
You have more energy. You're in vibrant health. That is why you want to adopt a healthy living lifestyle. Now there's a lot more I could say. What I'll say right now is that I have a lot of resources on my website. My new website larrydcook.com, you can go over there and take a look, I have a book, I have a DVD, I have healthy recipes, I offer coaching services, I have all kinds of resources for you that you can use to start adopting a healthy lifestyle. Some of them are free, some of them cost a little bit of money, but at the end of the day, if you start moving towards a healthy lifestyle, you will get better, I guarantee it.

Managing a Healthy Diet - How to Make a Food Diary
In this segment I am going to talk about how to make a food diary. It is easy to create your own food diary. You can use a small tablet that you can carry around with you such as this one here. This is just a tablet that I had laying around, and it's very nice and convenient. It will sit in your purse, it also has this nice band that you can put around and keep organized. Another type of tablet you may want to use is something like this. This is very nice because it has a pocket in the front which you can carry a calculator. You can also put any literature that you receive from your exercise trainer or if you want to carry some information about your favorite restaurants and the calories that they have. This is just a nice tablet also because it has lines and a lot of room for you to write your information.
Another thing that you can do is use an Excel or a Word spreadsheet. This is an example that I created. This would be an example for day one. Here you see there is listed foods and beverages, and you want to make sure that you include your water that you drank throughout the day, the portion sizes, the brand names or the restaurants that you ate at, and then your motivation for eating. Here I have put on my food diary six meals because I like to eat small frequent meals sometimes especially on the days that I exercise.
It does not mean that I have to use all of these slots because some days I may just eat three meals, however I've given myself the room that I need. Some people do prefer six small frequent meals a day, and some people only eat three meals a day. There are certain factors that play a role in how often a person eats. They my eat more frequently on days that they've worked out. Some people even eat more on days that they are really stressed, and I'm not considering that you need to eat because you are stressed. Some times those days just require that your body does need more calories. So we need to make sure that we factor that in in creating our food log.
Sore Throat Home Remedies That Work
But what if you have to give a business presentation and bang on the day you get up with a sore throat. The condition, also called pharyngitis or tonsillitis, can be painful and very uncomfortable. It is mostly caused by viral or bacterial infections such as Common cold, Influenza, Laryngitis, Strep throat and other respiratory tract infections. The condition can also be caused by allergies and irritants. Symptoms of sore throat include:Pain and itching in the throat, Dry throat, Soreness, Hoarse voice, Difficulty in swallowing food or water, and Swollen lymph nodes under the jaw and in the neck. The simplest way to soothe a sore throat is to mix a quarter teaspoon of salt in half a cup of warm water and gargle at regular intervals. There are some other home remedies that you can try. Take a cup of warm water and Add 1 teaspoon of honey in it. Squeeze half a lemon. Mix it. And sip it slowly.
Take a cup of warm water. Add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon honey, And 1 teaspoon of lemon juice in it. Mix them well. And drink this solution for about 2-3 times a day. Take a glass of hot boiling water. Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder and 1 teaspoon of black pepper powder. Mix it well. Strain the solution and gargle with it for about 2-3 times a day. Some tips to further help you with sore throat. Chewing a piece of ginger or licorice root can also bring some relief. Drink warm liquids and soups. If the condition continues for more than a week, consult your doctor. And if these home remedies have worked, say hello to the audience with confidence.
How To Clear A Sinus Infection With 3 Natural Remedies
how I overcame a pretty severe nasal infection with natural remedies. The nasal infection was a result of me being sick for a couple of weeks. I had really severe congestion right in this area. In fact, it was so bad and so painful that I actually thought that maybe my root canal was failing.I had that happen once before on this side of my mouth. I had all of this pain, blowing out nasty snot out of just this nostril. I was a little bit concerned. Here's what I did. It's something I haven't done in a long time. I used the Neti Pot concept, which is basically pushing water in one nostril, out the other, with natural remedy formula.
Here's what I did. I used a product called Nasaline, which is essentially a tube that you can put water into. But you don't just put water in here. You put some sea salt, which comes with the product, and then I also added nano silver, which is antibacterial. I added sea salt, nano silver, water, and then I'm in the shower when I'm doing this so I'm leaning over and I'm pushing water in through one nostril and it's coming out the other nostril. I know, it sounds gross but it totally works.
When you're adding Nano Silver and sea salt to the area up here, the cavity, basically what's going on is we're killing all of the bad bacteria. I got to tell you, I was actually very pleasantly surprised. I'm telling you the truth. It was cleared within 24 hours, absolutely gone in 24 hours. This is something that you can try at home. This is the product:
Nasaline. This is what comes in there, the little tube, and the sea salt. Don't forget to get your nano silver. You can get this stuff at any health food store. You can get it online as well. This one is called MesoSilver. Worked great for me. There's an alternate this is your traditional Neti Pot, which looks like this. The Neti Pot, you would just tilt your head and pour it in. Totally good way to go. However, I really like this because you can push the water through if you have any blockage. That's it for now. I really enjoyed being able to use this remedy and I think you will too. If you ever have any kind of nasal congestion or particularly an infection, I highly recommend it.
Natural Cures for Insomnia (Can't Sleep)
One of the most common things I'll hear from my patients, is they'll say, "Dr. Axe, I can't sleep." And if you're one of those people that have trouble falling asleep, or struggle with insomnia, or you wake up during the night, that's very common. In this video I'm going to go through the exact steps you need to follow to get better quality of sleep and to help you fall asleep fast.Step number one in overcoming sleep deprivation is to change your diet, surprisingly. And, for a lot of people, their diets are keeping them from falling asleep. Before you go to bed, you need to really drop your carbohydrate consumption. If you're consuming too many sugars and carbs, your body is burning those, it's getting warm. And so, lowering that sugar, and grain intake, and carbohydrate intake before bed is important. And get some good quality fats before you go to bed. Something like an avocado is a great food to actually help you fall asleep at night, either avocado or some organic yogurt. So again, avocado and organic yogurt, are the best foods to help you naturally fall asleep. The reason they work is those foods are high in magnesium and potassium. Magnesium and potassium are two crucial nutrients you need to help relax the body and to help you fall asleep at night. So remember avocado and yogurt, the top two foods you can consume just a little bit here or there in the evening that will help you fall asleep at night.
The second step you need to do to overcome insomnia is to reduce stress. And for most people, along with diet, this is the big thing that's keeping you up at night, is your mind starts racing, you keep thinking and you can't shut your brain off. And there are several reasons for that. One, is you watched TV up until the point that you went to bed. That visual stimulus you're watching constantly, especially the blue light, and that doesn't just include the TV screen, it also includes your computer, your iPad, or your phone. And that light is blue light, which actually tells your pineal gland in your brain that it actually needs to keep running, so it messes with your circadian rhythms and cortisol levels. It keeps you from falling asleep at night when you were looking at that bright blue light in the computer screens and TV screens. So, about 30 minutes at least, ideally, an hour, but at least 30 minutes before bed, you need to shut off all electronics, and you need to start reading something that helps you relax.
Or start journaling. So you can get out a journal and start writing things down. You can look at your schedule for the next day and write that down. But I really recommend reading a novel that you enjoy, reading a devotional, your Bible, or just something that helps you relax and wind down at least 30 minutes before bed. And that's going to help, and in general reducing stress.
And if you have something that's really stressing you out, that's keeping you from sleeping at night, I recommend you start writing down those things that stress you out. Work on addressing those the best you can, and then start scheduling things into the week that you love to do. It is so important. If you've had a great day, and you've been happy all day, it actually creates certain hormones in your body known as endorphins that actually help you fall asleep at night. So actually, having a good mood throughout the day can help improve your sleep at night. So step number two, shut down the computers and read a book before bed. As well as just add some joy into your life. Reduce stress; it's very important for falling asleep at night.
Step number three, is take quality supplements, especially a magnesium supplement. And taking a magnesium supplement, about 400 to 500mg a night before bed, can help you naturally reduce stress, and really improve sleep. And so I recommend a high quality magnesium chelate or magnesium citrate before bed. So taking a magnesium supplement can help you fall asleep.
Also supplements like melatonin can help, or valerian root. But I don't recommend doing those on a long term basis. Now, if you have jetlag, or you're not able to sleep just for a day or two, taking melatonin on occasion, about 3gms is fine. But you just want to do a small amount of melatonin on occasion, not on a regular basis. But again, consuming magnesium can actually help you fall asleep at night. The next thing, and I think this is a great thing for helping you improve your sleep, is using essential oils, especially lavender essential oil and chamomile essential oil.
So again, lavender oil, you can diffuse that by your bed at night, or just take a few drops of lavender oil and rub it on your neck. Also, you can actually take a warm bath with lavender oil and Epsom salts. Epsom salts work because they have magnesium. Additionally, lavender oil actually has certain aromatic compounds that help relax your body. So doing a detox bath, if you're going to go to bed at 10 or 10:30, get in the bath at around 9:00 and soak in there for 30 minutes with your Epsom salts and lavender oil. Just take about 20 drops of lavender oil, rub it all on your body, get in a warm/hot bath, and relax there 20 to 30 minutes. Get out, and then, go and read a book for 30 minutes while you wind down, something relaxing and then fall asleep there at night. But again, lavender oil and Roman chamomile oil are great essential oils to help you overcome insomnia, and to help you fall asleep at night when you can't sleep.
And last, but not least, just in general, changing your lifestyle. I recommend a few things to do around your home to help improve your sleep. Get the temperature in your house cold, definitely below 70 degrees, often times, upper 60s to mid 60s for some people is necessary. So again, get your house nice and cold. That improves sleep. The other thing you want to do is make sure your bed is comfortable. If there is a big dip in your bed, it's time to get a new bed. How to Get Rid of Cough Home Remedies
This health capsule is about homely ways to get rid of Cough and its symptoms. Just like sneezing, coughing can happen any time. A cough can be either dry or productive, which means accompanied by mucus. Basically, it is a mechanism to clear your throat and airways.
However, persistent coughing can cause headache, exhaustion and sleeplessness. If accompanied by an itchy throat and congestion, it can play havoc with your temperament. This problem can be caused by: Exposure to irritants, Common cold, Flu, Allergies, Asthma, Post-nasal drip, Bronchitis and Cigarette smoking. Most over-the-counter cough medications can spark side effects. Try some natural and safe home remedies for relief.
Take half a cup of water in a boiling pot. Add 1 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon black pepper, and 1 tablespoon honey. You may also add cinnamon sticks. Boil this for about 2-3 minutes. And drink this daily until the condition improves.
Take 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, And 1 tablespoon of honey. Heat this mixture in a microwave until it becomes warm. And drink this syrup several times a day. Take a cup of water. Then take some fresh ginger. Peel, slice, and crush it lightly. Then Boil this ginger. Strain this solution. And drink this ginger tea for about 2-3 times a day. Time for some tips to help you get relief from cough.
When dealing with persistent cough, apply some vapor rub on your feet before going to sleep. Take plenty of fluids, warm liquids in particular. You can also suck a hard candy to ease dry cough. And if your cough causes shortness of breath or persists for several weeks, consult a doctor. Sure you are feeling better now. So now do not forget to cover your mouth when sneezing otherwise others may catch cold.

Ear Infection Home Remedies
How would you feel if the sounds of the world are blocked to you by an infected ear. Definitely miserable! Ear infections are caused by presence of viruses or bacteria in the middle ear. They occur more often during childhood due to blocked Eustachian tubes. Ear infections can also happen because of Ear wax buildup, Common cold or other respiratory infections, Allergies like exposure to irritants and air pollutants Changes in climate and altitude and a genetic predisposition. Pain and inflammation are almost inherent in ear infections.
The condition could lead to symptoms like:
Headache, Fullness or pressure in the ear, Fluid drainage from the ear, Fever, Nausea, Vomiting, Loss of balance & Temporary loss of hearing ability. To treat ear infection at home, I will now tell you about some home remedies. For the first remedy Take a cup of salt Put it in a pan and heat it over low flame for about 8-10 minutes. Then place it on a cloth and seal the open end with a rubber band or tie a knot. When it is bearably hot, place the salt pouch on the infected ear for about 5-10 minutes. Repeat this remedy daily as many times as required. This method is particularly safe and effective for kids.
The Next home remedy to treat ear infection. Take about 2 tablespoons of sesame oil or mustard oil in a pan. Place 2 garlic cloves in it. And heat them on a low flame until they turn blackish. Now finally, strain the garlic oil. And collect it in a container. Dip a cotton ball in this garlic oil and squeeze 2-4 drops into the infected ear. Another home remedy to treat ear infection. Take about 4-5 basil leaves and extract the juice. Dip a cotton swab or a cotton ball and apply the juice on and around the infected ear. Do not put it in the ear canal. And repeat this remedy twice daily. If the pain worsens or does not subside within a couple of days, consult your doctor.

Treatment of dementia and Alzheimer's disease
Scientists and physicians continue to learn more and more about Alzheimer's disease and dementia in general, but unfortunately, they still haven't found a cure. With that said, though, there are medications that can help lesson the symptoms of dementia, like memory loss and confusion. Currently, all the medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration or the FDA are aimed at either one of two neurotransmitters:acetylcholine or glutamate. The first class of drugs are cholinesterase inhibitors. Acetylcholine is a really important neurotransmitter in our brain and nervous system. Even though it has important functions in other parts of our body, in our brain, it helps our neurons communicate. And it's this communication of our neurons that allows our brain to think and do things like sustain attention, sense things, learn and remember things.
Okay, so, say we have these two neurons here that are trying to communicate, one transmitting neuron and one receiving neuron. The transmitting neuron releases the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which then binds to an acetylcholine receptor on the receiving neuron. And this is how these two neurons communicate, right? To sort of regulate this process, though, you have this enzyme that constantly breaks down the acetylcholine that's being released and this sort of makes sure that too much doesn't build up.
And this guy is called acetylcholinesterase, and it breaks acetylcholine down into acetic acid and choline. Think of acetylcholinesterase like Pac-Man and all of these acetylcholines as the little dots that he eats. He's constantly going around eating the dots, but some of them may get by to communicate between the neurons. So, it's like this balance, right, of some of the dots being eaten and some communicating.
Acetylcholinesterase is a type of cholinesterase. So, if we throw a cholinesterase inhibitor into the mix, like the ghost in Pac-Man, then we inhibit or stop our Pac-Man from doing his job of eating the dots, right? Which means more of these dots build up, and we tilt the balance in favor of the dots or acetylcholine. Now, patients with Alzheimer's disease, though, already have decreased levels of dots in the first place. So, with Pac-Man there, they have even less.
But if we inhibit Pac-Man, then we have less dots being eaten, right? And so, we end up with more active acetylcholine. And by doing this, by stopping the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, we can help neurons communicate in people with Alzheimer's disease. And this medication can help delay worsening of dementia symptoms for about six to 12 months on average, for about half of the patients that take them.
And although they're usually pretty well tolerated, some side effects can include nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. All right, so that's the first type of medication for Alzheimer's disease. The second type targets the neurotransmitter glutamate, and is called memantine. Just like acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, memantine is prescribed to help patients with symptoms related to memory, attention, reasoning, and language skills.
Instead of acetylcholine, though, now we focus on this neurotransmitter called glutamate. Glutamate, when at normal levels, actually helps our learning and memory, and is considered an excitatory neurotransmitter. When glutamate levels get too high, though, it's actually toxic to the cell. And we use the word called excitotoxicity, where the cell gets actually too stimulated and may die as a result.
Having too much glutamate is thought to be one possible way that people with Alzheimer's disease lose nerve cells and therefore have problems learning and remembering new things. So, again, we've got our two neurons transmitting and receiving, right? And we have this receptor on the receiving neuron called the NMDA receptor, which is also like this channel or gateway that lets in ions to the receiving cell.
Now, this gateway lets them in when glutamate binds to it. So, if there's too much glutamate and this gateway is always open, then the receiving neuron can suffer from excitotoxicity, because it's like always being stimulated. Now, memantine blocks this receptor for glutamate, so it keeps this channel closed more. And when it's closed more, we bring down the stimulation to normal levels and avoid killing the cell by overstimulating it.
Think of glutamate like this key that opens the door to this party down here, letting all the ions in. If too many get in, though, the party gets too big and too crowded and out of control. If we put a different lock on the door, memantine, then the key won't open it, and the party stays at reasonable levels. Now, memantine is used most often to treat moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease, and will often be taken alongside cholinesterase inhibitors.
Some side effects can be things like headache, confusion, and dizziness. So, switching gears a little bit, other forms of treatment often target behavioral symptoms, like agitation, irritability, aggression, and anxiety. Usually, it's preferred to focus on treatments that don't use medications for these, though, like behavioral modification, since a lot of medications intended to treat behavioral symptoms can actually increase confusion and can even be associated with increased mortality.

Cholesterol and Alzheimer’s disease
Millions suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. And the available and foreseeable treatments are disappointing at best. Given the absence of disease-modifying treatments, there has been growing interest in effective strategies for the prevention of the disease in the first place. Even if we were able to just delay the onset by as little as one year, we could potentially prevent more than nine million cases over the next 40 years.Once cognitive functions are lost in Alzheimer’s disease patients, they may be lost forever. Consequently, prevention, rather than a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease, appears as a more realistic strategy to offset the catastrophic impact of this dementia. Considerable evidence now indicates that Alzheimer’s disease is primarily a vascular disorder, based on a number of lines of evidence that point towards impaired circulation of blood to the brain Vascular risk factors such as high cholesterol can be thought of as a ticking time bomb to Alzheimer’s Disease. What’s bad for the heart may be bad for the mind.
Traditionally, there have been two competing theories for the cause of Alzheimer’s, the amyloid cascade model that implicates the buildup of amyloid plaques within the brain, and the vascular model that argues that is the lack of adequate blood flow to the brain due to atherosclerosis. We now realize they are not mutually exclusive, and that arterial disease can set up a vicious cycle in which atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries may contribute to Alzheimer’s plaques in the brain.
Although at times portrayed as tantamount to poison, cholesterol is an essential structural component of all our cells, but if there’s too much it can become a major factor contributing to various diseases including coronary artery disease, stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Too much cholesterol in our blood is unanimously recognized to be a risk factor for the development Alzheimer’s disease, and cholesterol may play an active role in the progression of Alzheimer’s as well. Autopsy studies have found that Alzheimer’s brains have significantly more cholesterol than normal brains, and specifically appears to accumulate in the Alzheimer brain plaques.
But we used to think the pool of cholesterol in the brain was separate from the pool we had in our blood, but there is now growing evidence to the contrary. For example, LDL may be able to cross the blood–brain barrier into the brain. So a high-fat diet may not only increase cholesterol levels in the blood, but also the influx of cholesterol into the central nervous system. In addition, having high cholesterol may even damage the blood brain barrier itself and allow for even more cholesterol to flow into the brain, providing the missing link between high cholesterol and Alzheimer’s. Individuals with higher cholesterol levels at midlife have a higher risk of going on to develop Alzheimer’s disease.
A cholesterol over 250 could potentially triple the odds of Alzheimer’s. And now we have high-tech PET scanning of the brain that can directly correlate the amount of so-called bad cholesterol in our blood with the amount of amyloid build up in our brain. You can do it right in a petri dish. Adding cholesterol makes them churn out more the amyloid that makes up Alzheimer plaques, whereas removing cholesterol can decrease the level of amyloid released from cells. In addition, amyloid degradation is less efficient, clearing amyloid is less efficient in a high cholesterol environment. Cholesterol can then help seed the clumping of the amyloid.
Using an electron microscope you can see the clustering of amyloid fibers on and around little microcrystals of cholesterol. Once in the brain, cholesterol can also undergo auto-oxidation, causing the formation of highly toxic free radicals. So having high cholesterol levels in the blood is thought to increase the risk of dementia not only by inducing atherosclerosis and impairing blood flow, but may directly affect the neurodegeneration within the brain. In conclusion, excess dietary cholesterol could in principle contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease, and the evidence linking high cholesterol to Alzheimer’s appears to be steadily mounting. Of course, some of this work was paid for by drug companies hoping to capitalize on Alzheimer’s with cholesterol-lowering statin drugs;
ironic, since statins themselves can cause cognitive impairment. Though rare, statin side-effects may include short- and long-term memory loss, behavioral changes, impaired concentration and attention, paranoia, and anxiety, as early as five days after starting the drugs, but sometimes even months later, though folks should recover within a month of stopping the drugs.
A better strategy then, may be to change the lifestyle factors that lead to the high cholesterol in the first place, in particular saturated fat from the diet, but it’s not enough for us to just tell our individual patients. Systematic implementation of educational campaigns promoting radical changes in cultural and societal values may be necessary to adopt Alzheimer’s defeating strategies by patients in a broader sense, and such actions may provide potentially huge dividends by preventing both cardiovascular disease and dementia, two of our leading causes of death.
Alzheimer’s Is Not Normal Aging
In the year 1901, a woman called Auguste was taken to a medical asylum in Frankfurt. Auguste was delusional and couldn't remember even the most basic details of her life. Her doctor was called Alois. Alois didn't know how to help Auguste, but he watched over her until, sadly, she passed away in 1906. After she died, Alois performed an autopsy and found strange plaques and tangles in Auguste's brain -- the likes of which he'd never seen before. Now here's the even more striking thing. If Auguste had instead been alive today, we could offer her no more help than Alois was able to 114 years ago. Alois was Dr. Alois Alzheimer. And Auguste Deter was the first patient to be diagnosed with what we now call Alzheimer's disease. Since 1901, medicine has advanced greatly. We've discovered antibiotics and vaccines to protect us from infections, many treatments for cancer, antiretrovirals for HIV, statins for heart disease and much more. But we've made essentially no progress at all in treating Alzheimer's disease. I'm part of a team of scientists who has been working to find a cure for Alzheimer's for over a decade. So I think about this all the time.
Alzheimer's now affects 40 million people worldwide. But by 2050, it will affect 150 million people -- which, by the way, will include many of you. If you're hoping to live to be 85 or older, your chance of getting Alzheimer's will be almost one in two. In other words, odds are you'll spend your golden years either suffering from Alzheimer's or helping to look after a friend or loved one with Alzheimer's.
Already in the United States alone, Alzheimer's care costs 200 billion dollars every year. One out of every five Medicare dollars get spent on Alzheimer's. It is today the most expensive disease, and costs are projected to increase fivefold by 2050, as the baby boomer generation ages. It may surprise you that, put simply, Alzheimer's is one of the biggest medical and social challenges of our generation. But we've done relatively little to address it. Today, of the top 10 causes of death worldwide, Alzheimer's is the only one we cannot prevent, cure or even slow down.
We understand less about the science of Alzheimer's than other diseases because we've invested less time and money into researching it. The US government spends 10 times more every year on cancer research than on Alzheimer's despite the fact that Alzheimer's costs us more and causes a similar number of deaths each year as cancer. The lack of resources stems from a more fundamental cause: a lack of awareness.Because here's what few people know but everyone should:
Alzheimer's is a disease, and we can cure it. For most of the past 114 years, everyone, including scientists, mistakenly confused Alzheimer's with aging. We thought that becoming senile was a normal and inevitable part of getting old. But we only have to look at a picture of a healthy aged brain compared to the brain of an Alzheimer's patient to see the real physical damage caused by this disease.
As well as triggering severe loss of memory and mental abilities, the damage to the brain caused by Alzheimer's significantly reduces life expectancy and is always fatal. Remember Dr. Alzheimer found strange plaques and tangles in Auguste's brain a century ago. For almost a century, we didn't know much about these. Today we know they're made from protein molecules. You can imagine a protein molecule as a piece of paper that normally folds into an elaborate piece of origami. There are spots on the paper that are sticky. And when it folds correctly, these sticky bits end up on the inside. But sometimes things go wrong, and some sticky bits are on the outside.
This causes the protein molecules to stick to each other, forming clumps that eventually become large plaques and tangles. That's what we see in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. We've spent the past 10 years at the University of Cambridge trying to understand how this malfunction works. There are many steps, and identifying which step to try to block is complex -- like defusing a bomb. Cutting one wire might do nothing. Cutting others might make the bomb explore.
We have to find the right step to block, and then create a drug that does it. Until recently, we for the most part have been cutting wires and hoping for the best. But now we've got together a diverse group of people -- medics, biologists, geneticists, chemists, physicists, engineers and mathematicians. And together, we've managed to identify a critical step in the process and are now testing a new class of drugs which would specifically block this step and stop the disease.
Now let me show you some of our latest results. No one outside of our lab has seen these yet. Let's look at some videos of what happened when we tested these new drugs in worms. So these are healthy worms, and you can see they're moving around normally. These worms, on the other hand, have protein molecules sticking together inside them -- like humans with Alzheimer's. And you can see they're clearly sick. But if we give our new drugs to these worms at an early stage, then we see that they're healthy, and they live a normal lifespan.
This is just an initial positive result, but research like this shows us that Alzheimer's is a disease that we can understand and we can cure. After 114 years of waiting, there's finally real hope for what can be achieved in the next 10 or 20 years. But to grow that hope, to finally beat Alzheimer's, we need help. This isn't about scientists like me -- it's about you. We need you to raise awareness that Alzheimer's is a disease and that if we try, we can beat it. In the case of other diseases, patients and their families have led the charge for more research and put pressure on governments, the pharmaceutical industry, scientists and regulators.
That was essential for advancing treatment for HIV in the late 1980s. Today, we see that same drive to beat cancer. But Alzheimer's patients are often unable to speak up for themselves. And their families, the hidden victims, caring for their loved ones night and day, are often too worn out to go out and advocate for change. So, it really is down to you. Alzheimer's isn't, for the most part, a genetic disease. Everyone with a brain is at risk. Today, there are 40 million patients like Auguste, who can't create the change they need for themselves. Help speak up for them, and help demand a cure.
Natural Cures for Allergies, Bronchitis, Hay Fever, and Asthma
Cure Allergies, Stop managing Allergies with Drugs. Allergies are a Disorder of the Immune System, which is a Form of Hypersensitivity.
Interviewer: - Your program can stop or cure Allergies?
Dr. R. Needle: - It is a respiratory problem. I am an ex smoker, and I have cured my bronchitis along with curing literally because it is early stages of asthma which is a very, very severe prevalent problem out there. People have been managed with drugs, all drugs cause negative side effects, and there are no exceptions. No matter what you hear they all cause negative problems somewhere else in the system, which will show up somewhere else and require another specialist.
Interviewer: - We hear of a lot of allergies in the spring of the year with the flowers
coming out, with your program; they won’t have that any more?
Dr. R. Needle: - The body heals itself with my program and that will include the respiratory
problem, it can be a problem in your feet, in your brain, in your heart, in your liver,
in your prostrate whatever we are dealing with. When the body is healing itself it will decide when you give it the right food , the right water, the right supplements and you will generate a balance for your specific genetics; it is different from anyone else’s, it is a highly , highly customised program, very,
very highly customised , the body will heal itself. ‘First remove the causes of sickness and disease’
Medical doctors treat the symptoms with drugs and surgery.
Interviewer: - Dr Needle, what are the differences between other healers, and what you do?
Dr. R. Needle: - First of all, we are all familiar with our regular traditional medicine, the medical doctor and they are treating symptoms of the patients. Secondly, are alternative healers and alternative healers are using natural substances and they are also treating the symptoms of their patients, the alternative medical doctors such as naturopathic physicians, alternative chiropractors and nutritionists. What my program does is not treat anybody’s symptoms, I am removing the causes.
Interviewer: - How do you remove the causes of sickness and disease?
Dr. R. Needle: - I’m bringing a balance to that patient’s body, for its specific genetics. It is done with a five hundred food-eating plan, it is not a diet, and it explains, it goes over what foods are causing sickness and disease in the body, and those that are healthy. For that specific blueprint: - of that particular patient. Number two, I am bringing the right nutritional supplements, I have yet to have a patient come to me that brings me their supplements, and by the way, you don’t have to come to
me in Atlanta, Georgia, I work all over the world, by phone. Most of my work is by phone. I am using the blueprint of that individual and getting the right combinations and the absorption and assimilation of nutrients that is basically non existent. People are guessing and they are experimenting because that’s all that’s out there. My program gives this alternative which really, really helps given the right water. People have no idea what’s right, we cover that as well.
Interviewer: - When you are talking about ‘Blueprint’, are you talking about genetics?
How does that work?
Dr. R. Needle: - Everyone has a specific DNA and a genetic build up. No one is the same. One size, never, never, never fits all and so I am working through an ancient art that I use, called Dowsing, with a pendulum. I have been given a gift from God to be able to bring in this information; it is expressed through the vibration. It’s vibrational medicine; it’s another name that you can call it.
Interviewer: - Why are your supplements different than those at Health food stores or on the
internet?
Dr. R. Needle: - I spent 2 years going around the world to find, first of all the integrity of that particular manufacturer and do they produce, what they say they are going to produce, which is on the labels. It took 2 years to put my supplements together. It is Phyto-nutrient therapy, when you take a multi vitamin therapy and put it into your body. You are putting isolated synthetic chemicals, and they don’t work. The body doesn’t look at that as whole food. Phyto-nutrient or plant nutrient therapy that
I use has the whole food intact and so it will safely excrete what it doesn’t need, which even the natural multi vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants which people have been taking, they have been taken out from nature. Therefore they are not going to bring the highest level of operational healing which my particular program offers.
Interviewer: - Do you pick up sickness and disease earlier than modern medicine?
Dr. R. Needle:- Absolutely, through this ancient art of dowsing, I am able to pick up sickness and disease way before modern medicines, techniques, machines. It is so exciting because, the good news is that I am picking up something so early that we can either reverse it or stop it in its tracks.

How to Allergy Prevention Naturally
Today is the first day of spring, and one of the things about yoga that makes it so interesting is that yoga is about being in harmony with the seasons. So our physical body of course is nature. We typically think of nature as trees and that which is out there. Yoga says your physical body and your mental body, your entire being is a function of nature.
So yoga attempts to give each person a practice that will allow that person to resonate with their natural radiance. Ok, so being the first day of spring yoga says, ok, what does spring look like in our own body? So I walked in the studio today, couple of folks said things are popping, everything is budding, my sinuses are stuffed up, the allergies are hitting.
So right off the bat there are some great things we can do just sort of getting the body open and ready for spring. Spring is a beautiful time, there's a lot more energy available, so people find a lot more creative energy. They're running around doing things, but as things pop, the pollens are in the air, we need to keep our channels open. So i'm gonna show a couple really simple yoga techniques. Will this help folks with allergies? Absolutely.
Here's a couple of really simple techniques for allergies. So every morning when you wake up, you go to the bathroom wash your face, brush your teeth, just throw this into the mix. Just about 10 times, stick your thumb right in the base of your nose, rub up kind of firm, rub up to about the middle of your forehead. just about 10-15 times. All the way up? Yep, all the the way up. Do that about 10 or 15 times. Then you're gonna bring your fingers right to the corners of your nose. You're gonna press in, rub out, about 10 or 15 times.
I have to do that before my make-up, cause i want my make-up on. I'll let you do that. So it's best first thing in the morning and that what this is gonna do is that this is gonna open up the sinus cavity,
but it also stimulates the nerve plexuses here, it's gonna help balance out the endocrine system. So this helps the body basically change with the season. Instead of being in dis-harmony with the season, the body harmonizes with the season.
So you do that every morning, not just in spring. No, I do it every morning. In the spring it's the most important, just because there's a lot more stuff in the air, you wanna keep especially these passages open. There's a whole other set to do. We do stuff with the abdomen, perhaps we can do a whole show on that, but for the spring these two just takes a couple minutes. And the other things that's really nice to do that we do in yoga is we actually massage the teeth, instead of brushing them first thing in the morning. Your tooth brush is used to get the food particles out of your mouth. Sure.
And first thing in the morning, you haven't eaten, there's no food particles. You want to freshen the mouth. In yoga they've been doing this for thousands of years.
Anciently they used neem leaves, crushed up neem leaves, which you can find in some natural tooth paste, but any tooth paste will do. Preferably organic, natural toothpaste. Massage each tooth all the way to the root of the tooth to the gum, massage each tooth in your mouth and then massage your tong and just massage around inside of your mouth. What that will do is that it will help of course clear the mouth, but you've got nerves attaching to each of your teeth and you've got acupuncture meridians, so this helps to keep the whole head clear. Does that kind of clear your head? That clears, that sort of pre-clears you for the day. So you find if you've got allergies, they just won't be as bad. If you do it for a week or so, I've got a lot of students that their allergies just don't attack them anymore. Really? That's interesting. And a lot of students get off their medications.

Using Energy Healing for Positive Changes: An Alternative Health Perspective
Welcome! In this fast video I’m going to share with you what energy healing is and why so many people around the world are feeling the call to participate in energy healing; and how and why it’s working so quickly, fast and easily for them. First of all, if we look around us, there’s a lot of dis-ease. There’s a lot of people who are really experiencing like ‘an amnesia.’ They’ve forgotten who they are, they’ve fallen off their path, and away from their Nature.
And, because of that, there’s many unhealthy people who are unhappy. We even see it in our elders: we see our elders who are just unhealthy, unhappy, stressed, or they’re even miserable. So we understand that something’s gone wrong here and we need to return to the archaic knowledge, (or you can think of it as a second age of enlightenment) to return to our own Nature and get back to healing. The other thing is, that if you look at even the science that is out there [shamans, healers, prophets, energy healers] have been saying it all the time: that we are all one; and we all come from energy. Well, now science is proving it too.
Whether that’s through quantum physics, or you can even look into Michael Talbot’s Holographic Universe, or study Rupert Sheldrake’s Morphogenic Field, (I really suggest you explore those), but it is the real, basic, essential truth that in the end the one thing that connects everything around us is ‘Energy.’ We all are composed of energy and we all receive and give energy. But it’s to do that (work with energy) from a space of healing and from a space that’s natural and pure that brings about the greatest in health and happiness for the mind, the heart and the body.
And so that’s what Energy Healers do; whether it’s Naturopathic Medicine, whether it’s Reiki, Touch Therapy, Shamanic Practitioner, Sound Healing, Angel Healing. And personally, on my life path, I love to embrace all of them! And I love to really explore them and base each one on the different kinds, because everybody has a different way where they’re more easily and naturally able to return to that space of oneness and that field of pure healing and infinite potential.
You can ask yourself today, well, How do you best receive energy healing? Is it by listening to sounds, nature scapes, certain songs or rhythms? Is it by touch and the healing feeling of touch? Is it connecting to Angels or guides? Or moving your body? They are all wonderful ways to explore, but start asking yourself that question so you can make sure that you come to your own Nature and that you return to that field of oneness and healing and flow.
I’d love to hear about your own healer’s journey and how you’d like to work with energy yourself and you can share that in the comments below. You’re also welcome to sign up for a free gift, if you haven’t already done so. It’s called Stress Release for Inner Peace and it’s a really great way to start to change your mind and bring you back to your heart and natural rhythm and your natural capacity to heal. And so I look forward to sharing with you more and journeying with you.

What is the Atkins Diet? Reality of Atkins diet plan and Atkins recipes
Are you planning to lose your weight? Well, there are thousands of diet plans but it is very hard to pick one and follow it. One such diet plan is Atkins Diet. The Atkins Diet is a low carb diet, developed twenty years ago by American heart specialist, Dr Robert Atkins. He found, the diet he devised for his patients not only improved their heart conditions it also reduced their weight without food restriction. Dr Atkins realized that the carbohydrate restriction was forcing the body to 'change gear' and start preferring its fat stores to the food taken in as a source of energy.
This breakdown of fat stores produces ketones. The body excretes any ketones which are surplus to requirements, hence the ability to determine whether the body has started using its fat stores for energy by testing the urine for ketones.Weight lost under these conditions is mostly from the body's fat stores, rather than lean muscle. Purpose of the Atkins Diet is to change your eating habits to help lose weight. The Atkins Diet is also healthy lifelong approach to eating.
Whether you want to lose weight, boost your energy or improve health, it helps with high blood pressure or metabolic syndrome. The Atkins Diet has several phases for weight loss and maintenance, starting out with a very low carbohydrate eating plan. According to the Atkins Diet, obesity and related health problems, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease, are the fault of the typical low-fat, high-carbohydrate American diet. It uses a system called net carbs, which is the total carbohydrate content of an item minus its fiber content. For example, a half-cup of raw broccoli has 2.3 grams of total carbs and 1.3 grams of fiber, putting its net carb value at 1 gram.
The Atkins Diet’s approach to carbs will burn off your body's fat stores, regulate your blood sugar and help you achieve optimal health, while not leaving you feeling hungry or deprived. Once you're at your Ideal weight, the Atkins Diet also helps you to identify your personal carbohydrate tolerance, the net carbs you can eat each day without gaining or losing weight.
